About Takaungu Village

Takaungu is an ancient Swahili trading village at the mouth of Takaungu Creek, a tidal estuary 55 km north of Mombasa Airport in Kilifi County. The village was established by Mazrui Arabs fleeing Omani rule in the early 19th century and retains a distinctly pre-colonial Swahili character — carved wooden doors, coral-rag walls, narrow lanes, and a working dhow-building yard on the creek foreshore.

The creek itself is one of the most beautiful on the Kenya coast — tidal, mangrove-fringed, and calm enough for swimming and kayaking. The village elder community run informal walking tours of the old quarter and the dhow yard; the experience is one of the most authentic on the coast, visited by very few tourists. Timing an arrival with the incoming tide enables swimming in the creek from the village beach.

Takaungu is one hour from the airport via the B8, with the final approach along a narrow dirt road through the village. A saloon handles the route in dry conditions; high clearance is preferable after heavy rain. CoastLine recommends combining with Jumba la Mtwana Ruins (25 km south) for a half-day North Coast heritage route.

What to See & Do
